Men's Style Tips: Socks and Sandals

The number of days that shorts are required during a British summer is debatable (not including the inevitable Indian summer that continues to shock us each September). Whereas some will leave them purely for their holidays abroad, if you are wanting to embrace the heat and still wear your socks in style, we have got you covered.

Contrast plain with a pattern

The key part of pulling off socks and shorts is to keep it understated. We understand that in the excitement of a sunny British day, you may wish to wear shorts with a bold pattern or that are heavy on with embellishment, but we would recommend staying simple. In this way, a rule to follow is to mix patterned socks with a plain outfit. Navy blue shirt with black shorts? Try a subtle red or blue-spotted sock for the final touch.

In this same vein, if your shirt or shorts feature a pattern – such as a blue stripe – keep the socks simple. Stick with a complementary colour scheme, and choose a solid coloured sock.

Ditch the no-shows

There has been a rise in popularity in the no-show (or ‘invisible’) sock. But here at the London Sock Company, we are huge believers in flashing our socks with pride. While the no-show socks do have some merit, we would recommend keeping with the classics.

Avoid black and white

Although these are staples, when wearing shorts and showing off your socks it’s best to add a splash of colour in the mix. Black and white are best to be avoided, as you don’t want to look like you are about to hit the gym. If you want to stick to the darker shades, try a navy blue or dark green to keep it understated.

It’s not just about the socks

Make sure that your shorts are good quality and age-appropriate. When it comes to the length, they should be just above the knee and fairly fitted. When it comes to style – unless you are heading to the coast – don’t pair socks with shoes and swimming trunks (this rule also applies to athletic shorts). For the perfect combo, try dark chino shorts with a crisp white linen shirt. The ideal outfit to add some socks to for a small pop of colour.

Say ‘no’ to knee highs

Only when wearing shorts do we ever discourage the use of the phrase ‘pull your socks up’. We are big fans of our knee-high socks, but during the summer it’s best if these stay in the drawer. The art of wearing socks with shorts can be encapsulated in the word ‘bunch’. To achieve this, put on your socks as normal and carefully pull them down to bunch around your ankle. Never fold them down!

Keep it casual

Socks and shorts should only be worn in a casual setting. We would say leave your trainers at home, and choose dark blue boat shoes with a lighter blue sock, or brown loafers with a pastel. A perfect outfit for a warm British summer evening.
